Raising Adults, Not Managing Children

🌟Weekly Inspiration🌟

Monthly Theme: They are Capable

What's the end goal of parenting? Are we raising children or are we raising future adults?

I want you to zoom out—and think about the bigger picture of what's required to raise future adults in our modern world. This is no small task—though there are lots of little tasks along the way that lead to actualized adults who can handle adversity, manage their responsibilities, navigate relationships, solve problems, and recover from setbacks. They need to know how to be connected in an increasingly lonely world, how to limit their screen time, how to navigate a world with a 24-hour scary news cycle, and how to build a life with purpose and meaning. Our children will eventually leave our homes—how are we preparing them for that? Are we preparing ourselves for that moment?

Every time we make a parenting choice, we should ask ourselves: Is this building the adult I want them to become, or is this just making my life easier right now?

Trusting their capability is a gift. It says "I believe in you" in the most powerful way possible.

Ask Yourself:

In what ways am I keeping my child dependent? Are there any small shifts I can make?
Can I let go of perfectionism, and how might that translate to their independence?
Am I addressing my grief in letting go?
How much of my identity is wrapped up in being needed?
How can I redefine my role and our relationship as my kids grow?
What will be my next chapter?

Be Well. ❤️
